Founded in 1998 by Luc and Geneviève Janssens, Portfolio Limited Edition is the collaboration of two experienced artists who desired to create together a single harmonious wine made from Bordeaux grape varieties. It combines their passion for art and winemaking and the belief that such a rare harmony creates an enhanced quality of life.

Hendry Ranch Vineyard, Block 8: The vineyard is located on a geologic formation known as stream terraces. These terraces are composed of stone, clay and gravel mostly of volcanic origin. Planted in 1974, the old vines are producing a wine with great elegance, power, and intensity with concentrated flavor.

Detert East Vineyard: Located in west Oakville, the Detert East Vineyard produces some of Napa Valley's best Cabernet Franc. It was planted in the 1970s and is believed to be the oldest site for this variety in Napa Valley. The vines are planted on an alluvial fan and Coombs gravelly loam soil. This unique site creates Cabernet Franc that exudes fragrant and rich blueberry, cassis, anise and sage aromas. It beautifully complements the Hendry Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year the production is very small.

Portfolio Limited Edition sources its Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Hendry Ranch Vineyard (located in southwest Napa) and its Cabernet Franc from Detert East Vineyard (in the Oakville Bench). Both vineyards are cultivated with the utmost attention to detail: the vines are carefully manicured year-round and deliver a very low-yielding crop each vintage, limited to a maximum of 3 tons per acre.

Winery

The winery was designed so that Geneviève and Luc would be personally involved in every step of the winemaking: from crushing, pressing, barreling and bottling to packing and shipping.

The winery’s equipment reflects the gentle, gravity flow philosophy of winemaking. The barrels, filled and racked by gravity flow, are aged at the winery in a controlled environment.

Portfolio is one of the exceptionally few, unique wines in the world that is never touched by a pump!

Winemaking

Sorting-min.jpg

After walking through the vineyards all season long tasting the grapes and checking the development of fruit and tannins, Geneviève decides the harvest date. The grapes are hand-picked and transported to the winery in small, 35lb. containers, where they are hand-sorted before and after desteming and crushing into a 1-ton bin fermenter. During the fermentation process, the cap is gently punch down several times a day, as needed.

During an extended maceration, Geneviève and Luc sample the wine daily, carefully evaluating each lot, noting the evolution of flavor, tannin and mouthfeel before deciding on the appropriate moment to drain and press.

The wine is then barreled into 100% new French oak from the forests of Central France. During the 30-month barrel-aging process, the wine is racked several times to achieve clarity and polished tannins.

During the entire process, from crushing to bottling, the must and wine are moved with great gentleness by gravity flow, never by pump. Portfolio is bottled by hand at the winery, unfined and unfiltered. Anecdotally, during the aging process the wine enjoys a daily average of two hours of Mozart’s music.
